Getting around Colombia is fairly inexpensive, especially once you’re within the country. Domestic flights are relatively inexpensive, offering a convenient and swift way to hop between regions.

For a week-long Colombia itinerary, consider immersing yourself in one or two distinct areas. Our recommendation is to partner one city, either Medellin or Bogotá, with Cartagena or the Caribbean coast.

Whether it’s the cultural richness of Bogotá and its surroundings, the vibrant energy of Medellin, or the sun-soaked charm of Cartagena with its Caribbean coastline and nearby national parks, each option promises a unique adventure.

Cartagena and the Carribean Coast

1. Explore the Islands

Considering the 5-island tour to Rosario Islands in Cartagena for some family fun with your teen? 

Well, let me tell you, it’s a fantastic choice for a day out, based on our personal experience of taking the 5-island tour.

Picture this: cruising around various Rosario Islands, enjoying snorkeling opportunities, and exploring the site of one of Pablo Escobar’s sunken planes beneath the crystal-clear waters, adding a unique historical dimension to our island-hopping escapade.

These all-inclusive tours sort you out with lunch and transport, and you can decide whether to include some adult beverages. 

Now, here’s the intriguing part – the bioluminescence. Having missed a similar experience in Costa Rica, we seized the chance, and swimming in the glowing blue waters proved to be an absolute highlight for us.

Opting for bioluminescence extends your island stay, as you await the evening’s second tour. While we savored a sun-soaked day on the beach, it’s essential to note that a full-day experience is not for everyone. 

Those seeking a more relaxed pace can either skip this segment or consider it for a separate day trip. If you do choose the bioluminescent option, pack generously with snacks and water to enhance your island-hopping delight.

We really can’t recommend Cartagena and, specifically the 5-island tour, more highly. Don’t miss it.

The craftsmanship on display spans a spectrum of creativity, from traditional Colombian crafts to modern interpretations.

The history embedded in the walls of Las Bóvedas adds an extra layer of significance to the items you’ll find.

5. Kayak Cartegena

From Cartagena, set your sights on Tayrona National Park, a pristine sanctuary along Colombia’s Northern Coast, just under 5 hours away. 

Nestled near the town of Santa Marta, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this protected area unveils tropical jungles, vibrant coral reefs, and untouched beaches.

You can no longer take a horseback ride on the beach, as it was banned in 2022. However, with hiking, snorkeling and wildlife watching, you will have lots to do. Or you can just enjoy the beach and do nothing. 

To be in Tayrona is to be surrounded by the rich greenery of the jungle and each step reveals a new facet of Colombia’s diverse ecosystem.

 Tayrona National Park isn’t just a getaway; it’s an immersion into the raw beauty of the natural world.

Keep in mind that this paradise operates on a unique schedule, closing its gates three times a year for two weeks each in February, October, and June. During these periods, the park is exclusively reserved for indigenous use, adding cultural significance to its conservation efforts.

For a memorable excursion with your teen, Tayrona National Park promises more than just a scenic retreat. It’s an opportunity to witness the harmony between the jungle and coastline, a glimpse into the rhythms of nature that remain preserved in this protected sanctuary.

7. Take A Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour

Once deemed the most dangerous part of the city, Comuna 13 has been revitalized through the power of art. Comprising 16 neighborhoods or communes, this area narrates a story of resilience and revival. 

While you can explore on your own, the best experience awaits those who book a tour with a local from Colombia. What sets this tour apart is the authenticity brought by local guides, who offer insights and personal stories that add depth to the vibrant graffiti-filled streets.

One of the highlights is the chance to savor some delicious Colombian food, making this experience a treat for your taste buds as well.

For the hiking enthusiasts, which is how we tackled the mountain with our teen, a trek offers both a physical challenge and a connection with nature. 

Alternatively, those seeking a leisurely journey can opt for the funicular or the cable car, both providing a scenic ascent that builds anticipation for the breathtaking views awaiting at the top.

Whichever route you choose, the reward is the same—an awe-inspiring panorama of Bogotá, stretching as far as the eye can see. 

12. Day Trip to the Salt Cathedral

Venture beyond Bogotá to explore the extraordinary Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá, a marvel of engineering and artistry that justifies the one-hour drive (traffic-dependent) from the capital. This unique attraction is a must-visit, well worth both the effort and cost for the experience it promises.

For the independent traveler, hop on a bus at the Transmilenio North station (Portal Norte) headed to Zipaquirá. This budget-friendly option allows you to explore the Salt Cathedral at your own pace, navigating public transit without the need for a guide.

If you are looking for a more unique way to get to the site, take the tourist train, known as Turistren, from Sabana Station in Bogotá. The steam train option offers a unique and limited departure schedule. 

While we generally champion the “Do It Yourself” approach, we understand that sometimes circumstances call for a different strategy. If the TransMilenio bus system feels overwhelming or if you seek a more intimate experience, consider a private tour to the Salt Cathedral, which is exactly how we traveled to the site. 

Though not our typical recommendation, The Salt Cathedral tour is a reasonable splurge making it a more affordable and convenient option for a smaller group and we had a wonderful day exploring it and the local town. 

Whichever mode of transport you choose, the Salt Cathedral promises an unparalleled experience, revealing a blend of architecture, art, and history that captivates every visitor. 

13. Make a Very Special Souvenir

Turn your visit to Bogotá into an unforgettable teen experience by creating a unique souvenir—your very own Colombian emerald ring. Delve into the heart of Bogotá’s jewelry district for a hands-on experience that allows you to design and craft a precious piece of jewelry.

14. Hike the Largest Waterfall in Colombia

Embark on a full-day trip from Bogotá to witness the mesmerizing La Chorrera, a slender waterfall that plunges an astonishing 2,000 feet (590 meters) into the lush jungle. 

Merely an hour from the city, this natural wonder beckons adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.

You can get to the waterfall using public transport, especially if you have a little Spanish. Just take the Tercer Milenio Transmilenio bus in the direction of La Chorrera waterfall. Your bus driver can tell you where to get off near the trailhead. 

Alternatively, you can leave all the planning to someone else and join a guided tour. 

The La Chorrera tour not only takes care of all your transportation but also includes a traditional Colombian breakfast and lunch, ensuring you’re fueled for the day’s exploration. 

The highlight of the trip is, of course, the hike to and from the waterfall. Allow 3-4 hours for this immersive trek through the jungle to the beautiful La Chorrera. 

As you and your teen stand in front of the cascading waters, you’ll realize that this full-day excursion is not just a journey to a waterfall but an adventure into the heart of Colombia’s natural wonders.

15. Take a Bike Tour

I know we already recommended a bike tour, but we love biking that much. AND Bogotá has become a renowned place for biking. Like, it is literally the Latin America cycling capital. 

With over 550 km of bikeways, the city has an extensive cycling network. However, one of the best times to cycle in the city is on Sunday. During the now famous “Ciclovia,” which happens every Sunday from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. many of the major streets in the city are close to cars.

You can explore the city by bike on your own. The city has a great bike share system called Tembici.

Or if you want to mix your riding with getting to know the city and all its sights, book this 5-star bike tour. This Bogotá bike tour takes place once in the morning and once in the afternoon and will give you a wonderful introduction to central Bogotá.
