Wondering how many square miles is Disney World?

We are avid Disney fans and have walked every inch of what Disney has to offer. From Animal Kingdom, the largest Disney World park, to the smallest, Magic Kingdom, we have all the details on the size of Walt Disney World Florida.

We also have tips to make the best of your time and energy for your Walt Disney World adventure.

Read on to learn more about the sheer size of  one of our favorite  places aptly called “The Most Magical Place on Earth.”

How Big is Disney World, Florida

Walt Disney World in Florida is equivalent to around 39 square miles. If you think that sounds big. It is. All of San Francisco is only 5 square miles bigger. However, that size is deceiving.

The actual area of the theme park where you will be walking it out is much smaller, around 1.76 square miles.

To walk all 39 square miles of Disney World you will have to explore all of the resort hotels, parking lots, golf courses, and other facilities. You are probably not interested in seeing all of those  “hotspots.” So we will focus on theme parks.

But first, let’s get this conversion situation in hand so you can make sense of this distance.

How Big is Disney World in Acres

If you are planning a trip, you probably have the question, “How large is Disney World?” It is difficult to imagine a place in square miles. We tend to equate size in acres.

We will spare you all the math details. But here is how to figure out the Disney World acreage:

1 square mile is 640 acres.

A football field is 1.10 acres.

Disney World is roughly 25,000 acres. To help you conceptualize that the entire Disney World Resort in Orlando is roughly 22,690 football fields. So that is a lot of walking.

Remember, that a lot of that acreage is hotels, parking lots, etc. The sum of the actual theme parks are 1,125 acres or roughly 1,024  football field.

How Big is Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom covers an area of approximately 107 acres, which is equivalent to around 0.17 square miles.

If we are back to our football field analogy, Magic Kingdom is 97 football fields.

But how far will you walk, the entire loop to walk around the Magic Kingdom is roughly 1.6 miles. So at a very minimum, by the time you walk the .2 miles to Cinderella’s Castle and back out, your walking minimum will be 2 miles.

While Magic Kingdom is one of the smaller parks at Disney World in terms of area, it is one of the most popular. You will definitely appreciate that it is less walking to get to all your favorite rides.

How Big is Hollywood Studios

the main street through Toyland at Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the third-largest park, covering an area of approximately 135 acres, equivalent to around 0.21 square miles.

If you touch every inch of Hollywood Studios it would be like walking every step of 122 football fields.

While Hollywood Studios is technically bigger in acres than Magic Kindom, the layout may have you walking even more.

Magic Kingdom has this nice perimeter loop.  Hollywood Studios has a main loop of about 1.2 miles and also a .2-mile route out to the Rock-n-Roll coaster.

You definitely don’t want to miss the coaster, a favorite ride if you are at Disney parks with teenagers. But this additional spur means you may do more backtracking.

How Big is Epcot

Epcot is the second-largest park, covering an area of approximately 300 acres, which is equivalent to around 0.47 square miles.

To give you that visual understanding, you would need to lay down 272 football fields to make Epcot.

The World Showcase loop starting from the front gate is 1.7 miles so you definitely do want to do too much back and forth at this park.

How Big is Animal Kingdom

In terms of size, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the largest of the four parks, covering an area of approximately 580 acres, equivalent to around 0.91 square miles.

If you walked every inch of Disney Animal Kingdom it is the equivalent of 527 football fields. Wow!

The walking loop around this park is nearly 2 miles.

While we love Animal Kingdom for your littlest Mickie fans, the size of Animal Kingdom means you should do some careful planning.

How Big are Disney Water Parks

Disney World has two water parks: Disney Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.

Disney’s Blizzard Beach is the largest Disney water park at 66 acres. Typhoon Lagoon is 56 acres.

How Big is Disney Springs

Disney Springs is an outdoor shopping, dining, and entertainment complex. It was formerly known as Downtown Disney but was rebranded as Disney Springs in 2015 after undergoing a major renovation and expansion.

Disney Springs is divided into four distinct areas: The Landing, Marketplace, West Side, and Town Center.

If you walk every inch of Disney Springs you will walk 102 acres. For comparison, Disney Springs is roughly the same size in Disney acreage as Magic Kingdom.

How Much Bigger is Disney World than Disneyland

Disney World is huge in size compared to Disneyland Park in Anaheim. We are talking about comparing the 500 acres of Disneyland to the 2,500 acres of Disney World.

You can actually fit over 50 Disneylands in Disney World.

If we look at just the theme park area then Disney World is still bigger, but the comparison is not as crazy.

All four Disney World theme parks are 1.76 square miles.  Disneyland’s two parks, Disneyland Resort and California Adventure together equal  .25 square miles. So if you are comparing just the theme park areas then Disney World’s theme parks are about 7 times the size.

Given that Disney World has four theme parks (not counting its water parks) to Disneyland’s 2, it makes sense that Disney World is so much bigger.

If you are wondering how many miles in Disney World will I walk? The answer is probably closer to 7 or 8 to 10 miles a day.

But hey, the upside to the smaller Disneyland, is you will definitely walk less at Disneyland.

Top Tips to Help Navigate Disney World’s Size

Stay at a hotel near the parks

If you stay at a hotel that’s close to the park you’re visiting, you’ll have to walk way less. Disney has some hotels right by the parks that you can check out.

All four Disney World parks in Florida (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom) have different ways to get around.

Monorail: The Magic Kingdom and Epcot are linked by a pretty cool monorail that’s fast and fun.

Boats: You can also take a boat between Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s a nice way to chill and check out some views.

Buses: Disney has a bunch of buses that run between all the parks and hotels, so you can get anywhere pretty easily.

Skyliner: The newest option is the Skyliner, which is basically a gondola system that connects Hollywood Studios and Epcot to a few hotels. We especially like this mode of transit because it connects the more budget-friendly hotel, Art of Animation, to Hollywood Studios, our personal favorite park.

Plan your route and use the Disney World app

Before you head out, take a look at the map and plan your route to hit up attractions that are near each other. Or better yet, use the app.

The app is designed to provide real-time information about wait times, show schedules, and park maps, which can help you plan your day and minimize the amount of walking you need to do.

There are a few ways that the app helps you navigate the huge size of Disney World and save some steps.

Mobile ordering: With the app, you can order food from select restaurants in advance and then pick it up when you arrive. This can help you avoid waiting in line and save you some steps.

Wait times: The app shows wait times for rides and attractions in real time. This can help you plan your day and avoid long waits, which can save you from having to walk back and forth between attractions.

Show schedules: The app also shows schedules for shows and parades, so you can plan your day around them and avoid having to walk across the park to catch a performance.

Park maps: The app includes a detailed map of each park, so you can quickly and easily navigate your way around the park and avoid getting lost.

Overall, the Disney app can be a useful tool to help you save steps and make the most of your day at the park.

Take a break from walking

While taking frequent breaks doesn’t help you navigate the size of Disney World, it does allow for a much better experience.

We get it. We are a family of budget travelers and definitely want to feel like we are making the best of a Disney experience on a budget.

Breaks may mean one less ride for the day, but your memories will be all the happier for slowing down and enjoying the “Most Magical Place on Earth!”
