Are you planning a family trip to South America with teens? Look no further!

South America offers a wealth of exciting and culturally rich destinations that are perfect for families with teenagers. From breathtaking natural wonders to vibrant cities, there’s something for everyone.

We have traveled all over South America with our own teen.

We’ll share the top 7 places in South America for family travel that our teen, and your teen,  will definitely love.

1. Peru

Machu Picchu is a bucket list place for your teen

In all of the 25 countries we have visited, Peru is in our top 3. Between the adventure of the Amazon, the sacred Machu Picchu, and the lively city of Lima, there are few countries as great as Peru.

We recommend you begin your journey in the Amazon rainforest, an incredible destination for nature-loving teens. Explore the diverse wildlife, go on jungle hikes, and even spot the elusive pink dolphins.

We have reviewed the best Amazon jungle tours so you can pick the perfect tour for you and your teen. All of these tours leave from Cusco so that you can use the city as a base to launch to the Amazon forest and then explore the next bucket list spot: Machu Picchu.

Next up is the iconic Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Hiking the Inca Trail is a once in a lifetime experience experience for older teens, letting your teens discover the mysteries of this ancient city.

If your teen or tween is a bit too young for the entire Inca trail, we definitely recommend booking Huyana Picchu. Huyana Picchu’s towering peak offers a thrilling adventure with awe-inspiring panoramic views.

The best part of hiking Huyana Picchu is that it’s accessible to teens, as the minimum age for this hike is 12.

The journey is not only physically rewarding but also culturally enriching. Together, you’ll ascend through ancient stone pathways, gaining a deeper appreciation for the Inca civilization.

At the summit, the breathtaking vistas of Machu Picchu and the surrounding Andes will be a memory your teen cherishes for a lifetime. It’s an adventure that bonds families and creates lasting memories.

Cap it off your time in Peru in Lima, the country’s cosmopolitan capital, offering a mix of history, art, and adventure.

Our top thing to do in Lima with teens is a bike tour. If bikes aren’t your thing, take a boat tour to Islas Palomino to hang out with sea lions.

Regardless of what you see and do in Peru, this country is truly tops when it comes to the best place to see in South America with teenagers.

2. Ecuador

From the amazing Galapagos to the lush mountains of the highlands, Ecuador is a wonderful place for family vacations in South America.

Are the Galapagos actually worth it? Without a doubt.

The Galapagos Islands offer a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for your teens. They can snorkel with marine life, hike to Kicker Rock, and explore the famous Tunnels on Isabela Island.

We’ve traveled to the Galapagos twice. First on a tour, and the second time we DIY’d our itinerary. The convenience of public boats to move between the islands makes it absolutely possible to make a land-based DIY Galapagos itinerary for these amazing islands.

Back on the mainland, there is still so much to do in Ecuador with teens.

Then, venture into the lush green mountains of the Highlands, where adventure activities await. We hiked Cotopaxi, the second-highest peak in Ecuador. If hiking isn’t your thing, you and your teen can also explore the peak by horseback riding.

After Cotopaxi consider heading to Banos, known as the adventure capital of Ecuador. Booking adventures is one of our top travel tips with teens and Banos has absolutely everything your could want.

From ziplines to canyoning, Baños has more than your teen could ever experience.

If you are traveling with older teens, be aware that the drinking age in Ecuador and the majority of South America is 18.

We loved our time with our teen in Chile. We recommend starting your Chilean adventure in the capital city of Santiago

There are so many teen-friendly activities in the capital city of Santiago.  You can take a bike tour, ride the funicular up San Cristobal Hill to an expansive view of the city, and take in the unique street art.

From the capital, it is time to get out into nature.

Patagonia is the region at the tip of South America that is shared between the countries of Chile and Argentina.

For the Chilean Patagonia, head to Torres Del Paine National Park. Teens with a love for the outdoors will be thrilled to hike in Torres Del Paine, a stunning national park with glaciers, mountains, and wildlife.

We did the 14-mile round trip hike to the Torres Del Paine spires, and it remains one of our best-ever travel experiences with our teen.

If heading down to Patagonia feels too far away, check out Chile’s Lake District.

The region offers teens the opportunity to go kayaking, trekking, and exploring lush forests and volcanoes.

Another truly bucket list experience for teens is time spent in the the Atacama Desert. The Atacama is the driest place in the world.

The desert’s lack of moisture means there is not much development making it one of the best places in the world for stargazing.

In addition to the dark sky, the region’s unique desert formations alone will fascinate young minds with its unique beauty.

4. Argentina
